We watched the weather reports this morning, and decided to leave at a reasonable hour, in order to miss the surrounding rainstorms.  We left San Antonio by following the freeway loop around town and continued east on Interstate Highway 10.

When we stopped in the little town of Flatonia for gas, we spotted a laundromat and decided to kill some time doing laundry.  So, we relaxed, got coffee at the local store, and spent an hour off the road.

The ride across East Texas was uneventful, but reminded us how much this part of the state is midwestern and green, instead of southwestern desert.

We sprinted through downtown Houston and out the other side.  About 40 miles later, we arrived at our hotel in the Baytown, Texas, area.  Because it was only 12:30, it was too early to check in.  However, the concierge told us our room would be ready in about an hour.  We headed across the parking lot to a nice, cool Denny’s and had lunch.  When we went back to the hotel, the room was available, and we got settled in.

Our timing is still good!  Less than two hours later, the skies opened, the lightning started, and Texas surprised us with another startling thunderstorm, complete with driving wind and hailstones.  It was ferocious, but it didn’t last long.

We watched the rain, worked on the website, went back to Denny’s for a light dinner, and then crashed....
